Volunteers are essential to our success, whether working behind the scenes or interacting directly with museum visitors.
Volunteers are integral to helping the Montshire fulfill its mission to awaken and encourage a lifelong interest in science.
The Montshire also occasionally has projects for small groups of volunteers organized by schools or other organizations. For information about these and other volunteer opportunities at the Montshire, please contact volunteer@montshire.org.
Education Volunteers
Support Montshire’s educational programs. Learn more about being one of our Program Volunteers.
Explainers
Explainers interact with visitors to enhance their experience at the museum. Explainers greet groups, demonstrate exhibits, lead informal science activities, and more. Explaining is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with the public, have excellent interpersonal and communications skills, can communicate clearly, appreciate children, can work independently, and actively move around the museum galleries. Museum educators provide initial and ongoing training.
Accepting new volunteer EXPLAINER applications on an annual basis between September through March. Onboarding new Explainer volunteers on hold through the summer season.
Time Commitment: 3 Hours/weekly
Special Event Day Volunteers
Special Event Day Volunteers bring specific skill sets applicable to the event of the day, and interact with visitors to enhance their experience at the museum, This opportunity is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with the public, appreciate children, can work independently, and actively move around the museum grounds. Special skills include tinkering, engineering, geology, anthropology, paleontology, climatology, architecture, set design, and wildlife.
