Staff Positions
Exhibit Assistant
The Exhibit Assistant works with the Curator of Exhibits in many phases of exhibit maintenance, production and design in an environment with a national reputation for high quality interactive science exhibits.
The job is varied. It includes primary responsibility for day-to-day activities such as label production and replacement, exhibit and label prototyping and evaluation, and research on availability of traveling exhibitions. The EA will also be involved to a lesser extent in the creation of new exhibits. Some work takes place outdoors in Science Park or on the trails.
Approximately 20% time is spent on aquarium exhibits. In this capacity, the EA coordinates communication about all aquarium issues, learns how to maintain aquariums, manages aquariums during consultant's absences, keeps all aquarium labeling up to date, and brings to the Curator's attention any exhibit needs as regards aquariums.
Familiarity with or a willingness and ability to learn programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator is important. The EA must be able to write clearly and concisely, be attentive to detail, have manual dexterity, and enjoy problem-solving.
A science background is preferred. In addition we need a curious, hard-working, and enthusiastic learner/teacher who will enjoy approaching visitors on the museum floor as a part of his or her evaluation work. Some time flexibility is necessary.
Montshire is an exciting and enjoyable place to work, with a supportive staff environment.
Salary is competitive, and full benefits include employee health insurance, retirement plan, and vacation.

Museum Internships
The 15 week, full-time internship program is held during all seasons of the year. Part-time internships may be available to meet the needs of an individual intern. Training begins with an orientation to all phases of the Museum's operations. Interns gradually assume responsibilities during this period and by the second week are an integral part of the Museum staff. In addition to these responsibilities, each intern is involved in a major or several minor projects to be completed by the end of the internship. Interns will be able to confer regularly with staff members concerning their progress. At the end of the program each intern will receive an evaluation which may be used as a reference when applying for professional positions. Internship options include:
- Exhibit Design & Fabrication
- Membership and Development
- Public Relations
- Science Education
An Internship application in .pdf format can be downloaded and printed, or it can be obtained by contacting the Museum by email at montshire@montshire.org.
Prerequisites include an interest in science and a desire to work with people. Priority will be given to those interested in working in the field after the program. Familiarity with natural and physical science, communications and education are useful.
Housing with a local family may be available, although not guaranteed.
A stipend of $1000 is intended to help offset food and gas expenses.
